Bonnard Exhibition, The Collections, at the Bonnard Museum in Le Cannet
A painter who spent his life painting the same dining room, the same bathtub, the same woman, and who never painted the same picture twice. Pierre Bonnard returns to Le Cannet, to the house-museum dedicated to him, with a unique exhibition drawn from private collections on loan for several years.
First the familiar ones. Then the unknown ones. Finally, the place itself.
The appeal of this kind of event lies precisely in this mix: we rediscover canvases we thought we knew, and we stumble upon others that no one had ever shown to the public. Private loans are both a blessing and a curse; they arrive for a few years and then leave, and this is what gives the exhibition its parenthesis-like quality.
Le Cannet is not a postcard setting attached to Cannes. Bonnard lived there from 1926 until his death in 1947, in a villa he called Le Bosquet, and the light seen in the paintings comes from the hills rising behind the museum. The location lent itself to this.
Six months to verify a simple idea: for Bonnard, intimacy was never a retreat, but a way of capturing color where it falls.
