It all starts like a story. You have to push the gate of the marvelous Solvay Park, in the suburbs of Brussels, to access the Folon Foundation, installed in the walls of the old castle farm. An enchanting decor which conceals an equally magical work, that of Jean-Michel Folon, a Belgian artist who died in 2005.

Cartoonist for numerous magazines, including Time, Esquire and The New Yorker, illustrator of books, including Kafka's The Metamorphosis and the complete work of Jacques Prévert, poster designer for major events, set designer for the Grand Théâtre de Genève, decorator for the new Brussels metro... This jack-of-all-trades artist has expressed himself in all areas of creation, from painting to sculpture, including drawing, ceramics, cinema, cartoons, tapestry and even stained glass!

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Foundation, two exhibitions celebrate the memory and work of its founder. The first, L'Etica della poesia, organized at the Vatican Museums, highlights the civic commitment of the artist who, throughout his career, became the spokesperson for major cultural and ethical causes. 80 of his works, including watercolors, sculptures and drawings, are scattered around the Sistine Chapel.

The second, Manifestes, presented at the Foundation, is devoted to the posters created by Folon. The artist has indeed established himself as one of the greatest poster artists of the 20th century thanks to his colorful and unreal style. Requested by the biggest events, such as the Cannes Film Festival in 1979 or Roland Garros in 1982, Folon made it a point of honor to put his talent at the service of major associations such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace or Unicef. He notably designed for the latter a poster full of sweetness inspired by the Little Prince by Saint-Exupéry.

His dreamlike universe, inhabited by imposing silhouettes and eyes flying in the sky, is also found in the posters he designed for the cinema, such as that of Stalker by Andreï Tarkovsky.

Folon Fondation, named after the famous Belgian artist, celebrates its 20th anniversary with two exhibitions that enable us to rediscover Jean-Michel Folon’s poetic universe.
