Hair & Hair exhibition at the MAD, a hair-raising display: our images
Let’s embark on the crazy story… hair! Wigs, hairpieces, mustaches: the Museum of Decorative Arts literally split hairs to design this surprising exhibition questioning our often conflicting relationship with hair and our irrepressible need to tame eyebrows and hair. A subject that is far-fetched to say the least but which reveals many surprises on a sociological level. Why do we associate long hair with femininity, the Iroquois crest with the punk movement and the mullet cut with the character MacGyver?
By bringing together more than 600 works dating from the 15th century to the present day, the exhibition explains how hairstyles and body hair have been involved for centuries in the construction of appearances and the presentation of oneself. If the institution does not fail to carefully decipher the social and cultural codes inherent to our manes, it is also an opportunity to retrace the careers of great names in hairdressing such as Léonard Autier (Marie-Antoinette's appointed hairdresser), Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and Martin Margiela for whom hair has always been an essential fashion accessory in order to imagine the most spectacular silhouettes.
