Michel Audiard exhibition at the Château de Monte-Cristo
Monte Cristo Castle
Until September 17, 2023
Immerse yourself in the imaginary world of a bulimic artist endowed with a formidable sense of staging and whose talent is matched only by its excess. The figure of the earthy dialogist of the Tontons flingueurs is however well eclipsed here in favor of the sculptor Michel Audiard, “him, not the other” as he likes to remind him so much.
Ironically, the similarities are more to be found on the side of Alexandre Dumas, brilliant author of the Three Musketeers and sponsor of the extravagant castle of Monte-Cristo. This is where the superstar sculptor, to whom we owe nearly 80,000 works in his 50-year career, unveils some of the finest pieces from his repertoire.
An orchestra of animal musicians in electrifying pop colors takes place in this theater of greenery. Colossi in strata of resin bask here in the sun when bronze totems seem to soar skyward. Immaculate white metal angels watch over passers-by from a tree, while fragmented portraits of Camille Claudel and Alexandre Dumas let light shine through the sheet metal. In the neo-Renaissance style bachelor pad are hidden other creations, smaller, finely chiseled and never devoid of humor, like a nice snub à la Audiard.
