Our images of the exhibition Guino - Renoir: the color of sculpture at the Hyacinthe Rigaud art museum
Hyacinthe Rigaud Art Museum
From June 24 to November 5, 2023
Do you know the story behind "Renoir's hands"? In this exhibition recognized as being of national interest, the museum returns to this little-known affair in the history of art by shedding light on the fabulous destiny of Richard Guino, child prodigy of sculpture, spotted by Aristide Maillol around 1908 before becoming in 1913 the anonymous executor of the sculpted repertoire of the impressionist painter. An extraordinary journey that we discover thanks to 200 priceless pieces, studies and other bas-reliefs testifying to the virtuosity of the sculptor who achieved a personal career independently of his collaboration with Renoir. It was however under the direction of the old master handicapped by his rheumatism that the Spanish sculptor realized between 1913 and 1917 all his wishes by giving life to his drawings and paintings. From this fruitful collaboration was born a set of remarkable pieces considered as one of the peaks of modern sculpture, like this Venus Victrix with round and voluptuous forms, sketched like a bather, one of those which crosses the canvases of Renoir. An ode to femininity and an ideal of beauty inherited from Antiquity, the paternity of the joint work of Guino and Renoir is finally revealed today to the eyes of all after having been suppressed for a time by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard… An injustice very fortunately repaired here.
