A haven of peace

Brussels, this city which breathes history and art on every street corner, reveals to us one of its best-kept jewels: the squares district. It is in this exceptional urban theater that it all begins. A true open-air museum, a dazzling testimony to Brussels Art Nouveau, at the heart of which the facades with eclectic styles respond to the sumptuous gardens, decorated with bodies of water, sculptures and remarkable trees like this impressive Virginia tulip tree or this rare silver maple in perfect harmony, far from the urban bustle.

Extravagance or genius?

© visit.brussels - Jean-Paul Remy
It measures only four meters wide, and yet has stood out for more than a century as the most extravagant facade in Belgium! Many times criticized for its overly fanciful and disorderly appearance, narrowly escaping destruction, this narrow building built between 1900 and 1903 proudly asserts itself today as one of the jewels of the capital. Abundantly decorated with glass and clad in luxuriant artistic ironwork, this tumultuous and disconcerting work signed by the young architect Gustave Strauwen at the early age of 21 bears witness to an era when creativity and audacity defied all conventions.
