Henri Cernuschi's finds in Asia exhibited at the Cernuschi Museum
22
Follow in the footsteps of a travel-loving collector who fell in love with the Land of the Rising Sun. From Japan to Indonesia, from Antiquity to the present day, this sumptuous exhibition retraces the itinerary of Henri Cernuschi from his trip to the Far East until his return to Paris where this close friend of Émile Zola and Léon Gambetta founded one of the first museums of Asian art in the world. Of the 5,000 works of art, bronzes, ceramics, paintings, prints and illustrated books that this somewhat compulsive buyer brought back from Asia, the institution is revealing some of its most beautiful treasures, such as the precious Lei vase 3000 years old or this copper incense burner inherited from the Qing dynasty. The highlight of the show? A group of fully restored Japanese dragons that had not been displayed since 1930.
