Forget the dreamed or fantasized vision of an idealized Japan. Pierre-Elie de Pibrac, grandson of the extravagant Paul de Cordon, paints a modest portrait of the archipelago in an intimate series inspired by the tradition of Ukiyo-e, the subtle art of Chinese ink and woodcuts. For a little over six months, the photographer set out to meet exiled personalities, yakuzas and Fukushima survivors, with the desire to tell the story of the feeling of impermanence which permeates Japanese culture. His powerful photographic paintings respond here to a set of black and white photos devoid of any human presence but symptomatic of eternal Japan.
