The exhibition It at the Jeu de Paume: Defining the indefinite

9

Take a photo of “that”. If this request seems absurd to you, Victor Burgin nevertheless tried, throughout his career, an exercise which was just as absurd. The result is a rich work that the Jeu de Paume highlights in this monographic exhibition. From the psychoanalytic concepts of Sigmund Freud to the structuralist abstractions of Roland Barthes, the artist draws on a whole host of ideas borrowed from his wide range of references to speak about his favorite themes: beauty, consumer society and power dynamics. Each of her photos then becomes a surprising creation where the office secretary, generally confined to her post, suddenly appropriates the space and where the simple steps of a young woman become an allegory of beauty. And to complete the whole, the photographer suddenly leaves room for the writer to accompany his photos with equally confusing writings which adds a little more meaning to them to finish constituting a dense work, heavy with meaning, which, for to be fully grasped must be looked at at length, analyzed and interpreted.
