Albert Anker and childhood exhibition at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation

He is the painter of quiet Switzerland, of well-behaved children and old men dozing by the fireside. Albert Anker depicted a bygone time, that of the last peaceful hours of the 19th century, like no other before him. Describing the fury of the battlefields like his contemporaries hardly interests him; this exemplary father, hard tested in his flesh and blood by the loss of two of his children, likes simple gestures, peasant life, tranquility of the countryside and above all tender age.
Alone or accompanied by their friends, in their privacy, with their grandparents, on their mother's arm or lying in bed, the little ones go through the work of Albert Anker from start to finish. Among the 135 children's paintings presented, the Pierre Gianadda Foundation reveals here some of its most beautiful examples: exterior views taken on the way to school and absolutely charming interior scenes like this family portrait where we see a grandfather holding a newborn baby swaddled in a cloth on his knees, with at his side a little girl placing a delicate kiss on the baby's forehead. In this exhibition, everything is sweetness, tenderness and innocence as every childhood should be.
