Ari Marcopoulos exhibition at the Paris Museum of Modern Art
Museum of Modern Art Paris From April 5 to August 25, 2024

You can't be careful on a skateboard. To get started, you need audacity, guts, and a hint of impertinence: all of which can be found in the raw photos of AriMarcopoulos. The Museum of Modern Art in Paris celebrates the entry of skateboarding as an Olympic discipline by giving carte blanche to the emblematic photographer of the American underground: Marcopoulos here creates an unexpected dialogue between his powerful portraits and moving works by Giorgio De Chirico, César and Annette Messager.
A major witness to New York counterculture, the works of this legend of the skateboarding world are a veritable time capsule of the 1990s. Often favoring portraiture, he captures with an insider's eye the youth movement and the creative power of New York countercultures. A raw style and ease that have earned him recognition from the biggest names of our contemporary era. From personal assistant to Andy Warhol and Irving Penn to photographer of Jay-Z's album covers, he is celebrated as much by those displayed in museums as on teenagers' bedroom posters. A breath of style and insolent youth with a terribly lively aesthetic.
