Works by Jeff Koons exhibited... on the Moon!

Oh no... You're not dreaming! American neo-pop visual artist and sculptor Jeff Koons will soon exhibit his sculptures... on the Moon! A news that is surreal and unusual to say the least, don't you think?

Indeed, 125 miniature sculptures by the artist in stainless steel were placed in a lunar lander, aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, which took off last Thursday, February 15 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. And it is quite natural that the “Moon Phases” sculptures were chosen to embark towards the Moon!

First announced in 2022, the project has been delayed several times. Initially, the sculptures were supposed to reach the Moon at the end of 2022.

Each sculpture created by the artist actually symbolizes a distinct phase of the Moon: some represent phases from different points of view in space, others phases of the Moon seen from Earth, as well as a lunar eclipse . They all bear the names of people who have marked the history of humanity, such as Leonardo da Vinci, David Bowie, Mozart, Cleopatra, and even Warhol.

Arriving at their destination a few days ago, they will be permanently installed there, 384,400 kilometers from our planet!

Yes but… and the environmental aspect in all this? Do not panic ! All the sculptures are grouped in a transparent compartmentalized cube, built only from sustainable materials!

And know that each sculpture installed on the Moon corresponds to a larger format remaining on earth intended for sale, but also an NFT, consisting of a photograph of the sphere in miniature format on the lunar soil.

Did you know?
This project is not the very first installation of works of art on the Moon, since it was preceded by "Moon Museum", a ceramic tile decorated with drawings by talented artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, deposited in 1969, but also Fallen Astronaut, a mini aluminum sculpture by Paul van Hoeydonck, deposited in 1971.
