The percussion resonates. Surrounded by the Water Lilies and the murky water depicted by Monet, the dancer Michel Onomo aka Meech, makes his body vibrate. The story mixes with the dance, organic music accompanies the gesture and the words. Hip-hop pioneer, Bintou Dembélé choreographed the performance. For his new show, the artist abandoned his popping, flexing, funkstyle and electro crew and focused, for the sake of sobriety, on a single dancer. The body moves in front of the emblematic paintings of the king of impressionism. It twists and curls. Bintou Dembélé was inspired by the history of maroonage, that of slaves fleeing far from the yoke of their masters. Artistically, the term has not been reduced to this single definition and designates more broadly, the conquest of a space of freedom in the face of imposed constraints. The percussions stir, Meech trembles, the sacred is summoned, freedom exults. Rite of Passage II Solo 2 explores the existence of being, crossed by a thousand others. The dancer displays redemptive and contemporary gestures. During this timeless dance, two antagonistic legends meet, the one who gave birth to hip hop, and the one who initiated the pictorial movement of impressionism.
