Wonderful treasure of Oignies exhibition at the Cluny Museum
1
Do you know the history of the Oignies treasure? Dating from the 13th century, walled up five centuries later then entrusted to Sisters, the marvel has survived the ages and wars to be today presented at the Cluny Museum. For the first time, these prestigious objects are leaving Belgium almost in their entirety. The series of goldwork pieces, created by Hugo de Walcourt, known as d'Oignies, is associated with the history of the priory of the same name, which became famous thanks to Blessed Marie d'Oignies, a mystic still venerated today. Among the fifty objects making up the masterpiece, around thirty which can travel will be exhibited at the Cluny museum. Only three pieces had already been presented in France, exactly a century ago, at the Louvre. Through these magnificent objects, which have nothing to envy of the treasures of Arthurian quests, we discover the history of the priory and its protagonists, as well as the quality of the goldsmith's work carried out under the aegis of Hugo d'Oignies. In a place like the Hôtel des Abbés de Cluny, this exhibition made of gold and precious stones takes on a resolutely spiritual dimension. A medieval marvel which beautifully reminds us that the Middle Ages were not such a dark time.
