The exhibition The Fountain of the Innocents at the Carnavalet Museum
Carnival Museum
Until August 25, 2024
We walk past her without even looking at her; However, the Fountain of the Innocents is not what you think. For the first time in its history, the Musée Carnavalet invites us to observe this emblematic monument of the Halles district from every angle and to take the time to examine these statues with our eyes, to analyze these bas -reliefs and dissect these ancient marine decorations. Of
vestige of the Renaissance erected in honor of the kings of France to welcome Henri II and Catherine de Medici on their arrival in the capital with a scholarly and popular icon whose naiads inspired the nymph of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, the Parisian fountain is revealed in a fascinating hand-to-hand combat with eroded matter. The nereids sculpted by Jean Goujon leave their pedestal to tell us this little-known story of the capital. A forgotten story that tastes like stone and water...
Did you know?
Backed by the Church of the Saints-Innocents, in the 18th century the fountain overlooked the largest cemetery in the capital with its two million burials in the heart of Paris.
