André Breton was not always the poet and theoretician of surrealism that we know. Jean Dubuffet's best enemy was ready to study medicine when the First World War broke out. The writer was assigned at his request as a psychiatric nurse in the Vosges and very quickly became passionate about the art of the sick. Théodore Fraenkel, his high school friend, summed up this decisive experience for the poet: “Breton, in his insane hospital, was moved and terrified to see insane people who were greater poets than him.”
