The Jean Lurçat exhibition at the Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum: Earth, Fire, Water, Air: our exclusive images
Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum
Until December 29, 2024
Once upon a time there was Earth, Water, Fire and Air. What if Jean Lurçat, champion of contemporary tapestry in a troubled era, was also the greatest ceramist of the last century? Nearly sixty years after his death, the Hyacinthe Rigaud Art Museum paints a captivating portrait of this revolutionary artist whose heterogeneous work evokes the poetry of Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger and the Corbusier. In addition to his gift for painting and his love for monumental settings, this major exhibition dares to take a step aside to glimpse the paradoxes that surround his personality marked by an artistic revival and two world wars. Lurçat responds to the violence of his century with an ultra-colorful palette, an insatiable curiosity for the material, a universal language guided by the force he draws from the four elements to design his own repertoire of works in earthenware and decorated terracotta. In a spirit faithful to the symbolist universe of the artist, this furiously free exhibition reveals all the richness and diversity of the artist's production, of which the hundred ceramic vases from the Sant Vicens workshops will be the key to vault to solve the riddle that bears his name.
