Silent. But not only that.
The works of Valérie Belin take over the spaces of the Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux with their disturbing strangeness. Considered one of the most gifted photographers of her generation, the artist is designing a major exhibition here which retraces in around a hundred photographs her entire career, from the 1990s to the present day. From icon to mannequin, from narcissistic reflection to fantasy mirror, from natural to artificial, there is only one step. Here, Valérie Belin's emblematic series unfold like so many chapters of a vast visual fresco, disarming the reality that shapes us to introduce disorder. Does this beauty really exist?
From film to digital, from black and white to color, from cliché to composition, the artist plays with our perceptions, moving from the organic to the virtual until revealing to us the tangible appearance of our interiorities. Wax faces exposed in frozen perfection, the ghostly gaze of a pop icon, captivating “Black Women” or crowned still lifes, Valérie Belin sifts through this new generation of “Beautiful”, blurring the lines by merging the layers of time in a frenetic superposition of images. A radical and powerful approach to her art which now anchors Valérie Belin among the giants of the history of photography.
