The Paris 1793-1794 exhibition at the Carnavalet Museum
Carnival Museum
From Oct. 16, 2024 to Feb. 16 2025
Are we facing a scene of popular jubilation or a scene of chaos? When he painted La Fête de l’Unité and the Réunion on the Place de la Révolution, Pierre-Antoine Demachy captured the joy of a capital that had defeated the monarchy. A resounding victory, symbol of regained freedom, obscured here by a thick cloud of black smoke... The Carnavalet museum deciphers France's first republican experience by distinguishing a single year, undoubtedly the most complex, to understand the seditious role of Paris in the revolution. Articulated around more than two hundred and fifty paintings, sculptures, decorative arts objects, wallpapers, posters and pieces of furniture, this major exhibition narrates a terrible chapter in our history, crossed by so many fears and hopes, violence and collective stories than individual trajectories.
