Janine Niépce. With a name like this, it's hard to escape your destiny. This distant relative of Nicéphore Niépce, the brilliant inventor of photography, therefore did not shy away from it. Following the Second World War, the heiress embarked on a career as a humanist and committed photographer, a privileged witness to this “changing world”. Reflecting a rapidly changing society torn between the abolition of traditions and a revolution in morals, this black and white exhibition immerses us in the daily life of post-war women, propelling us to the head of the procession of the first major demonstrations of the MLF only in the privacy of their home doing laundry and cooking. Here we come across the faces of Colette and Simone de Beauvoir, alongside those of mothers and students on university benches. By taking a complicit look at her comrades, Janine Niépce thus transforms the image of women: the dream creatures frozen on glossy paper fetishized by men respond to her female portraits of citizens struggling to conquer their rights. Between anonymous figures and iconic personalities, the exhibition documents with rare intensity the upheavals of its time, painting the hollow portrait of an activist youth thirsting for freedom.
