Damien Deroubaix exhibition at the Bnf Richelieu
Bnf Richelieu
From Oct. 15, 2024 to Feb. 16 2025
At the crossroads of death metal and Vincent van Gogh sits a new dark king of contemporary art. Dark and powerful, the profound work of Damien Deroubaix seems haunted, as much by his illustrious inspirations throughout the history of art as by the ills of our society. Spooky shadows, Dantesque scenes, smiling fallen angels and grimacing skeletons... More than seventy paintings, prints, engraved panels and sculptures form an intoxicating dance of death, joined by masterpieces of engraving by Rembrandt, Dürer and Gauguin. Here, figures of death and apocalyptic creatures from the depths of darkness are born from dark ink, recalling the great masters of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. There, striking, iconoclastic and allegorical works bear the glorious mark of Goya and Picasso and the madness of Metal and its distorted guitars. In direct reference to the final works of Gauguin and Van Gogh, Deroubaix also plunges into a melancholy, surprisingly colorful, made of self-portraits and powerful still lifes, questioning human finitude... just like the solitude of the artist.
