Une mandoline fabriquée à mains nues par un soldat dans une tranchée. Des lettres, des médailles, des outils de fortune, des traces de soin et de deuil.

Pour le 110ᵉ anniversaire de la bataille de la Somme, l'Historial de la Grande Guerre, à Péronne, déploie une « histoire matérielle » de 1916 à nos jours. À travers ces objets, côté soldats comme côté civils, la guerre cesse d'être un fait militaire pour devenir une trame de vies.

La leçon est rare : la mémoire s'inscrit dans des choses simples, et les gestes ordinaires sont parfois la dernière trace de ce qui fut.
