Louis Ritman painted signs in Chicago. Born into a family of Jewish weavers from the Russian Empire, he arrived in Paris at the age of twenty, discovered Giverny in 1911, and returned there almost every summer until 1928, along with the small colony of Americans who had settled in the village of Monet. His Bather at Giverny, painted in 1914, belongs to the group of women he captured in the dappled light of the open air, yet this painter remains little known on this side of the Atlantic.

Reflections like his, the gallery Hélène Bailly Marcilhac has gathered together one hundred and sixty years, since 1866. Water comes first, moving and capricious surface where Signac, Renoir and Maurice Denis test their colour, then the double, when Giacometti, the Lalanne and Picasso question the pair and the repetition, finally the face, which Camoin surprises in a mirror and which Max Ernst and Miró take to the side of the dream. A 1951 canvas is included, signed Rudolf Schlichter, seventeen of whose works were seized by the Nazis under the label of degenerate art, and whose German title promises an uncertain ground trodden at dawn. Reflection, it seems, never shows the same image twice.

Did you know? Signac's Port-en-Bessin dates from 1884. The painter was not yet twenty-one and had just co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants, where he met Seurat.
