This exhibition of drawings retracing the development of the genre scene in the Netherlands during the 17th century and, more broadly, the proliferation of everyday motifs in drawings by Golden Age history, landscape, and genre painters in Holland. These works are instructive not only for what they tell us about everyday life in 17th-century Holland, but also for the changes in visual appreciation they signal among artists and connoisseurs.
