Saint-Étienne, Capital of Design in Motion

What if an entire city became a laboratory for the future? For six weeks, Saint-Étienne and its entire metropolitan area reinvent themselves, exploring new ways of creating, building, and imagining. The International Design Biennial 2025 transforms streets, museums, and industrial wastelands into a vast testing ground.

"Resource(s), anticipating tomorrow," the theme of this edition, poses a burning question: how can we rethink our uses in a changing world? Here, designers, engineers, artists, and thinkers don't just exhibit; they test, repurpose, and propose new solutions. Objects are no longer static; they evolve. Materials are no longer extracted; they are transformed.

From the Cité du Design to the Halles Barrouin, from Firminy to Saint-Chamond, creativity flourishes in the open air. A carousel built from scrap, fashion that draws its energy from what already exists, a fire show that ignites the night. Spaces are transformed, the city becomes a living organism, making every step a discovery, every visit an experience. This year, Saint-Étienne is not content with being the capital of design. It becomes the capital of the world to come.
