To elucidate this mystery and explain the attachment of our museums to our German neighbors, Dijon, Colmar and Besançon are forming a formidable coalition and are offering this exhibition in three parts. A meticulous inventory of nearly 200 masterpieces, all created in the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages or the Renaissance and today carefully preserved by France. Alongside the great masters Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer and Martin Schongauer, there are lesser-known artisans like Konrad Witz whose work marked a break with international Gothic.
