Rodin exhibition at the Mons Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium
Museum of Fine Arts of Mons
From April 13 to August 18, 2024
“I don’t invent anything, I rediscover.” Among all the quotes inherited from Auguste Rodin, this one undoubtedly rings true today. A great collector and fervent admirer of ancient statuary, the father of modern sculpture does not hide his worship of his elders. Critics of the time then gave him the laudatory nickname of
“Michelangelo of the 20th century” to express the genius of this “student of God”. More than two hundred sculptures, drawings, engravings and paintings bear witness here to the sculptor's rediscoveries and initial sources of inspiration. The Museum of Fine Arts of Mons thus dares to make connections with Vesalius, Mabuse, Rubens and Jacques du Broeucq, adored Renaissance architect and sculptor, before presenting him as the missing link to contemporary art thanks to the terrifying visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere.
