Clouds Theory exhibition by Laurent Grasso at Jumièges Abbey
Jumièges Abbey
From May 25 to September 29, 2024
He is the artist of the invisible. Laurent Grasso invites us to take a contemplative break on the remains of the Jumièges abbey. A suspended moment during which this star of contemporary art casts his eminently poetic gaze on this jewel of Romanesque and Carolingian architecture, nicknamed the “most beautiful ruin in France”. After having hosted the ghostly work of Ange Leccia, the abbey thus serves as a showcase for the sensory work of this dreamy visual artist whose labyrinthine and fragmented journey transports us from the shadows towards the light. The abbey dwelling reveals mysterious video projections where nature reclaims its rights, while enigmatic sculptural works in the shape of clouds float between the high towers. Guided by the magnetic fields of this historic site, Laurent Grasso willingly plays with our perceptions here, distilling a hint of magic on the sacred lands of impressionism by transforming this open-air museum into an unforgettable meditative experience before our eyes.
DID YOU KNOW?
At the end of the Hundred Years' War, the King of France Charles VII took up his winter quarters in Jumièges Abbey. His mistress Agnès Sorel, then eight months pregnant, suddenly joined him. This will be her final resting place: the favorite dies of mercury poisoning only a few days after giving birth.
