Photographing in Normandy exhibition, the latest MUMA exhibition
MUMA - André Malraux Museum of Modern Art
Until September 22, 2024
Heavy skies, clouds of steam, atmospheric caresses and rough seas... We could just as easily be in front of a painting by Claude Monet, observing a view of the port by Eugène Boudin or in full contemplation of a painting by Camille Pissarro, but this image has stripped itself of all impression to ultimately retain only the real world. In this captivating exhibition, the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art contrasts for the first time the versatile palette of Impressionist painters with the fleeting eye of the first photographers on the Normandy coast. Thus begins this powerful dialogue between heaven and earth, where the great names of art history mingle with anonymous characters. The poetic visions of photographers respond to the impressions of the painters; the moving seascapes of Édouard Manet correspond here to the static and immobile clichés of the Macaire brothers. Frozen in their momentum, these freeze frames manage to restore another reality, crystallizing on film the cliffs of the alabaster coast, the light of the estuary and the quiet ballet of the ships offshore which have never stopped rock artists from all over the world.
Did you know?
Certain impressionist painters were among the pioneers of photography, such as Edgar Degas or Paul Cézanne, who used their own photos to create certain portraits or landscapes.
