To give supreme praise to the reject. A pioneer in the art of recycling, Arman has made dilapidated objects from everyday life his artistic medium, transforming debris into archaeological treasures. Villa Kérylos, in its role as guardian of arts and culture, presents us with around fifty major pieces, from its famous inclusions and cuts of objects from the 1960s to its spectacular Accumulation of cello cuts on the terrace, to the apotheosis of the patinated bronzes of the Atlantis series, emerging like wrecks exhumed from an imaginary shipwreck, here facing the sea. Arman, with his gaze, both critical and playful, questions our modern society by integrating banal objects – razors, beer caps, stainless steel kettles – into a dialogue with the relics of an idealized classical culture. A life-size memento mori, pushing the accumulation of objects to the point of absurdity, sending us back to our own vanities.
