The Science Fiction exhibition at the European House of Photography!
European House of Photography
From October 16, 2024 to January 19, 2025
Could plants tell us the story of tomorrow? A science fiction theory that the European House of Photography invites us to explore, rereading history in a unique way through the prism of photos of plants. Far from unfolding a life-size herbarium, the exhibition transports us on a visual and immersive adventure through the imagination of plants, the heroines of new extraordinary stories. From the early works of Anna Atkins – a pioneer of botanical photography with her strikingly beautiful cyanotypes of algae and ferns – to the work of Karl Blossfeldt, whose macro images reveal almost architectural plant structures, the artists reveal to us details imperceptible to the naked eye to make plants true works of art. With her Uprooted Sculpture, artist and bio-hacker Heather Dewey-Hagborg transports us to a dystopian future dominated by genetically modified nature, as a final alert on the ethical consequences of scientific manipulation. Little by little, the border between reality and fiction dissolves. The aquatic and mutant water lilies of Pierre Huyghe silently dialogue with the transgenic plants of Eduardo Kac, hybrids combining the artist's genes and those of a petunia... An experience of living without faith or law, reversing right-thinking, until to offer us an improbable stroll into the heart of Fabrice Hyber's crazy installation, achieving the unprecedented performance of planting a very real forest in the institution. Enchanting and terrifying, these works – not unlike ancestral traditions placing Mother Nature as a sacred divinity – invite us to take a new breath to save the lungs of our planet.
