What students photograph

What does a preschool student look at when a camera is placed in their hands? What does a vocational high school student look at? The Robert Doisneau House of Photography has been asking this question every year since 2001 to classes throughout the region. This season, thirteen classes – from preschool to vocational high school – worked on a deliberately challenging theme: Nature vs. Nature. Each student observed their local area, questioned the impact of humans on the landscapes they pass through, and photographed what in their environment is natural, what is artificial, and what lies somewhere in between. Accompanied by four professional photographers – Antoine Bertron, Lilijeane Lac, Alexandra Serrano, and Rafael Serrano – the students learned to use the frame as a question: where does the natural element end, where does the development begin? What should be preserved? What do we transform without thinking? A group exhibition, then – but of a rare kind. What the Maison Doisneau brings together will not be a demonstration of artists, but a sensitive mapping of what the youngest see when they receive the tools to say it. Cleaned landscapes, inhabited wastelands, encroaching construction sites, resisting gardens: together, they form a program of visual education, certainly, but above all, the early echo of a generation that already knows that nature is no longer a stable backdrop.
