David Hockney exhibition: a British “Normandism” at the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts
Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen
From March 22 to September 22, 2024
Color alert! Between sumptuous paintings by Monet, Renoir and Caillebotte, dazzling works by pop art legend David Hockney come to stand out at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. Since 2019, the most expensive living painter in the world has set up his easel in Normandy, proof that the land of impressionism has lost none of its creative power. From this incredible fertility were born some thirty representations of the open air, rich in meteors as luminous as they are turbulent, vanishing horizons crowned with brilliant reflections, and vivid landscapes with electrifying colors.
Whether it is painted canvases or creations on iPad, the brushwork of the octogenarian with the soul of a child is as lively as ever, and captures the renewal of nature brilliantly. It is in this vigor that we find his resemblance to a Monet or a Degas: the English painter knows how to make the pigments vibrate, seizing variations of light with a resolutely impressionist truth. We can only thank David Hockney: through his eyes, we access a world of bright colors, filled with flowers, joy and beauty.
If you feel like comparing the works of David Hockney to those of his impressionist inspirations, discover the sensational art of Anna Boch exhibited in Brittany or the icy landscapes of Claude Monet in Clermont-Ferrand, to celebrate 150 years of Impressionism!
