Cimarron est un terme qui évoque, dans le monde colonial hispanique, l’esclave fugitif, mais après l’abolition de l’esclavage en 1848, il rappelle la figure héroïque de l’homme résistant à l’oppression. C’est le titre qu’a choisi l’artiste Charles Fréger pour son titre troisième volet d’une série photographique entamée en 2013. Son œuvre dresse un inventaire non exhaustif, dans un espace géographique s’étendant du sud des États-Unis au Brésil et comprenant quatorze pays, des mascarades pratiquées par les descendants d’esclaves africains, célébrant la mémoire de leurs ancêtres et de leur culture. Les 70 photographies de l’artiste présentées dans cette exposition permettent de poser un nouveau record sur cette communauté.
