Le musée Eugène Delacroix vous invite à une rencontre entre un peintre de génie - Eugène Delacroix - et un immense écrivain- Lord Byron -

« Giaour », ce mot exotique et fascinant, qui désigne pourtant le quolibet ingrat par lequel les Turcs désignent les « infidèles », a donné son titre au célèbre poème de Lord Byron. Les romans et les textes de celui qui inventa avec Mary Shelley le célèbre Frankenstein fascinent et inspirent le grand peintre romantique. La Mort de Sardanapale (1827), tableau directement inspiré du Sardanapale de Lord Byron (1821) en est le plus célèbre exemple. L’œuvre qui donne son nom à l’exposition met en scène une histoire d’amour, de trahison et de vengeance où se déchaînent les passions. L’action se passe en Grèce sous l’occupation ottomane, baignée par un orientalisme à la fois sensuel et violent alors que le riche Hassan devient fou de jalousie lorsque la belle Leila, son esclave, succombe au charme du Giaour. L’exposition confronte les tableaux de Delacroix qui illustrent la rixe entre le Grec et le Pacha et met en regard peinture, littérature, musique et opéra autour de l’héritage singulier fait au poème qui inspira les plus grands maîtres : Hector Berlioz, Ary Scheffer ou Alexandre Dumas.
