Julien des Monstiers - Beneath the Surface

1

Julien des Monstiers (born in 1983) is anything but a wise heir. He scrapes his painting, scrapes, layers, delves beneath the surface of things. The Ferme Saint-Siméon provided him with the perfect opportunity during his artist residency: 200 years of layered history – the inn of impoverished Impressionists, Norman industry, the landscape, tourist success – which he recreates in dense paintings exhibited at the Musée Boudin, among the Monets, Dufys, and Boudins in the collection.

Did you know?

La Ferme Saint-Siméon, on the heights of Honfleur, is the inn where, in the 1860s, Boudin, Jongkind, Courbet, Bazille and the young Monet used to meet. A canteen for artists, a modest boarding house, which has become a 5-star Relais & Châteaux. You can still have lunch in the room where the pre-Impressionist group warmed themselves in winter – and where, 160 years later, Julien des Monstiers set up his studio.
