C’est à Paris que Philip Pearlstein, l’un des grands maîtres de la peinture figurative américaine, a choisi de souffler ses 95 printemps. À travers une quinzaine de toiles réalisées entre 1969 et 2018, l’exposition souhaite rendre hommage à cet artiste qui, même s’il fréquenta Andy Warhol dans sa jeunesse, a choisi une tout autre direction esthétique. Plutôt que de se tourner vers le Pop Art et l’Abstraction, il décide de peindre uniquement en atelier à partir de modèles nus vivants, qu’il met en scène dans des compositions complexes et parfois dérangeantes. Hommes ou femmes, masqués ou dévêtus, posent ainsi dans un environnement savamment pensé par le créateur, où se mêlent tapis à motifs, meubles dépareillés, jouets vintages et sculptures ethniques. Il peint ensuite méticuleusement ses modèles, d’une touche à la fois neutre et attentive, en évacuant toute tentative de psychologie. Le résultat obtenu est à la fois frontal et réaliste et s’émancipe de toute interprétation narrative. Sa vision décomplexée de la figure humaine, bien loin de correspondre aux codes académiques, a fait de lui l’un des précurseurs du « retour à la peinture » des années 80 aux États-Unis. Un univers singulier à découvrir sans pudeur.
