Autodidacte, affranchi et solitaire, Théodule Ribot fait partie de ces artistes trop souvent oubliés, dont les œuvres sont pourtant reconnaissables entre mille. Ses toiles sombres, où règne le clair-obscur, témoignent du lien profond qui unissait l’artiste à la tradition picturale ancienne. Ses sujets, souvent tirés de situations et d’objets de la vie quotidienne (aussi bien les natures mortes que les portraits ou les peintures religieuses), portent en eux une réalité tragique, qui inspira nombre de ses contemporains, même s’il l’a toujours réfuté. Il partageait pourtant avec eux une tradition populaire, et une attention très forte portée aux gens de petite condition, dépeints avec une simplicité parfois déroutante.
